Ekphrastic Poems in Art Exhibit

Fall, 2010

My poems, "Vessels" and "A Lady Speaks," will be on display in The 2010 Language of Art exhibit featured in the Carnegie Gallery, Columbus Metropolitan Library—Main Branch on September 9-October 22. The German Village Art League commissioned me to write these poems, which accompany two pieces of art entitled, "Vessel" and "A Lady."

"Recovery" Received Honorable Mention in Poetry Contest

"Stealth" Named a Runner-up in Poetry Contest

My poem "Stealth" was named a runner-up in the 2009 poetry contest sponsored by The Fourth River and will appear in the spring 2010 issue.

On February 13, 2010, I filled in for Conrad Balliet, hosting his segment, "Conrad's Corner," on WYSO, 91.3 FM. In celebration of Valentine's Day, I read my poem "Royal Candles," a sonnet. The podcast of the segment can be heard here.

Election Day is reviewed in the article entitled, "The Commiserating Muse: Four Poets' Treatment of Suffering and Grief," by Chris Willerton, in volume 58, issue 4 (summer 2009), of Christianity and Literature. In addition, my review of Barbara Crooker's Line Dance is included in this issue.

Recipient, Judson Jerome Poetry Scholarship

July 2009

I've been awarded the Judson Jerome Poetry Scholarship which covers the entire cost of registration and tuition ($675) for the 2009 Antioch Writers' Workshop held on July 11-17 in Yellow Springs, Ohio. Judson Jerome was a poet and writer of nonfiction and textbooks, a professor, and a poetry editor who co-founded the Antioch Writers’ Workshop.

"Science Lesson" selected for Rosine Offen Memorial Award

Spring, 2009

My poem, "Science Lesson," which appeared in issue #40 (Autumn 2008) of Free Lunch, received the Rosine Offen Memorial Award from the Free Lunch Arts Alliance in Illinois. The alliance gives one poem from each issue of Free Lunch this award.

"Harnessing Infinity" a Finalist in Poetry Contest

Spring, 2009

My poem, "Harnessing Infinity," was named a finalist in the 2008 poetry competition sponsored by Dogwood: A Journal of Poetry & Prose. "Harnessing Infinity" and another one of my poems, "Ancient Ritual," will appear in the spring 2009 issue.

Conrad Balliet, the host of "Conrad's Corner" on WYSO 91.3 FM, has read several of my poems on the air the past two years. This year, Balliet read "The Poet Performs in the Theatre of Cows," which first appeared in the Atlanta Review, on January 26th and "Contentment," which first appeared in The Rambler, on April 23rd.

"Certainty" Nominated for Pushcart Prize

Ron Offen, the editor of Free Lunch, has nominated my prose poem "Certainty" for publication in Pushcart Prize XXXIII Best of the Small Presses.

"Confession" Wins the 2008 Janet B. McCabe Poetry Prize

July 9, 2008

My poem "Confession" has won the 2008 Janet B. McCabe Poetry Prize sponsored by RUMINATE magazine. Poet Luci Shaw judged the contest. Both "Confession" and another poem submitted to the contest, "The First Time I Saw a Shooting Star," will appear in issue 9 of RUMINATE in fall 2008.

Slipping Out of Bloom Accepted for Publication

My first full-length poetry book, Slipping Out of Bloom, has recently been accepted for publication by WordTech Editions, an imprint of WordTech Communications LLC in Cincinnati, Ohio. Release date is scheduled for June of 2010.

Poetry to Appear in Upcoming Publications

This summer and fall, my poetry will appear in two anthologies, Seasons of Change (Outrider Press, Chicago) and Mamas and Papas (City Works Press, San Diego) as well as in the following journals: American Poetry Journal, The Fourth River, New Madrid, Canary, CALYX, Mad Poets Review, Riverwind, Two Review, Verse Wisconsin, and Willow Review.

Events

The Cedarville University Language & Literature Department will host a poetry reading for my colleague, Helena Corder, and me on Thursday, September 23, from 7:30-8:30 in the Center for Biblical and Theological Studies room 101. Both of us will be reading from our new books, with a book signing following the reading. Details on the exact location of the reading will be available in August.

On September 9th at 5:30, I will read my poems "Vessels" and "A Lady Speaks" as part of the opening of The 2010 Language of Art exhibit sponsored by The German Village Art League. The reading and exhibit will be featured at the Carnegie Gallery in the Columbus Metropolitan Library—Main Branch in Columbus, Ohio.
